Kaleidoscope

I am woman....

Look into my soul and you will find
A kaleidoscope....

A place where childlike innocence
melds with the wisdom of the ages...

A place that echoes with the laughter of children yet to be born...
that echoes with my grandmother's lilting Irish brogue.

I am the mother...tender and nurturing
Seemingly fragile and vulnerable...
Who would stand ferocious before the very gates of hell...
To protect her children from harm.

I am the lover...strong and enduring
At one with you, yet apart from you...
Your greatest strength, your greatest weakness
Your second self...in mind, heart and flesh.

I am the daughter...
My bubbling laughter a joy in your youth...
My gentle hand a comfort
In your old age.

I am the gypsy dancer...sensuous and seductive...
The ballerina...graceful and aloof...
The drudge that washed your floors this morning.

I am the Temptress, the Laundress, the Fairy Tale Princess...

The single mother...praying to be rescued from the projects
All the while knowing...the only true rescue comes from within...

I am the power behind your throne...
The underpaid brains behind your business.

I have known violence...
Therefore I seek the gentle soul.

I have known ignorance...
Therefore I aspire to wisdom.

I have known poverty...
Therefore I live to set my children's feet on the path to success.

My tribulation has become my education...
My sorrow has become my strength...
My capacity for love...knows no bounds.

I am woman.

Look into my soul and you will find
A kaleidoscope.

Watch as it scintillates...casting prisms of
Light and shadow...
Fire and ice...

Listen to the echo...

I am woman.
